The Alexander Technique

What is the Alexander Technique
The alexander technique is an educational modality that teaches you how to use our body and mind at its full potential, in your activities. With verbal and hands-on instruction from a qualified Alexander teacher, students are taught to rethink movement patterns while learning to stop habitual movements that are usually done on auto-pilot. Through a series of lessons students acquire new habits for better ease, coordination, and breathing.
Founded by Frederick Matthias Alexander in the 1890s, the Alexander technique was developed after a long self analysis of his habitual movement patterns. He was experiencing some problems with his voice while he was acting and singing. For several years, F.M. Alexander observed himself in movement to find a cure for his performing problems that the medical field couldn't resolve. His determination and perseverance led to the formation of this educational modality that many people around the world get to benefit today. It's through a new way of thinking and moving that the Alexander technique helps us move and breathe more freely and effortlessly with the assistance of an experienced teacher. His discoveries stipulate that the quality of our movements starts with the quality of the relationship of the head-neck-spine.
What to expect
The Alexander technique is taught through hands-on and verbal instructions from an Alexander teacher. We all have moving habits that can be improved. They will be addressed during the lesson and new ways of moving will be presented through a series of simple activities.
A typical lesson is a personalized and interactive experience through different activities like a guidance through sitting and standing, a work on a firm massage table, then maybe some work on an activity like playing guitar.
Lessons run for about 45 minutes. Between lessons you will be invited to self practice on your own.
The number of lessons needed to achieve a better “use of self” depends on your involvement between lessons, situation, and condition. The technique is very gentle and you can benefit from it as early as the first session.
